Total renovation accentuates rural setting

When it comes to design that is completely in tune with the surrounding landscape, this renovated farmstead surely sets a new standard. Garden architect Arte Verde, tasked with renovating the courtyard garden, sought to establish an optimal connection between the design and layout of this farmhouse and the surrounding countryside.

It was this connection that served as the starting premise for this project. Arte Verde, a Zottegem-based landscaping firm led by Frederik De Vos, masterminded the makeover, starting with the demolition of the rear section of the farmstead. The intention was to open out the garden onto the landscape in line with the design office’s philosophy of creating an all-in garden with an emphasis on greenery and organic shapes. The main terrace in the courtyard garden, meanwhile, was arranged around the existing plane tree.

Dynamic height differences

Organic shapes always play a starring role in Arte Verde’s designs, and this project is no different in this respect. The curvy plant borders accentuate the terrace, creating a very natural-looking garden. The existing height differences were solved in a very creative way. The terrace, stairs and raised bio-pool thus form a single entity, with Vande Moortel Steenbakkerij’s brown nuanced SeptimA Chestnut clay pavers being the common theme. These pavers proved the perfect choice for this rural setting. In a later stage, the walls will be covered with lime plaster, after which the clay pavers will blend in even better. The colour nuances of the clay pavers in a wild bond contrast nicely with the curvy plant borders and the pool’s clean design.

High-quality paving material

The garden architect chose the SeptimA clay pavers precisely because of the nuances in colour. Besides its class-A rating, this paver also has low water absorption and is highly frost-resistant. Moreover, the long lifespan and ecological ECO-7-size format of this unsanded paver make it a high-quality paving material. In this instance, the clay pavers were finished with a low-maintenance cement joint. Rainwater is collected in drainage channels and a cistern that overflows into an infiltration well, a highly ecological solution to maintain groundwater levels. However, the visual aspect has also been given a lot of thought: the tumbled finish of the clay pavers adds texture to this authentic garden design. Just the perfect paver for accentuating the rural look and feel of this farmhouse.

Calm

No other paving materials were used to avoid visual distractions. Concrete was poured around the edges of the PPC pool, which was finished with clay pavers that were glued against it. The garden is an exciting mix of evergreen mass plantings and perennial borders, with ornamental grasses and a few flowering perennials here and there. The result is a unique all-in garden design that blends seamlessly with the house and the surrounding landscape, which was precisely what the designers sought to achieve with this makeover.
