From lighting design to bespoke solutions: how BEGA takes design freedom to the next level

With its 48V collection, BEGA has launched one of the most comprehensive and versatile outdoor lighting systems. But the German family-run business is going one step further. Using Quick Fit, designers can customise luminaires down to the level of colour, height, light colour or cable length. “Light brings a fourth dimension to architecture,” says Thomas Van Brantegem of BEGA.

NOA PARTNER

BEGA is renowned for its robust, timeless luminaires. How does the 48V collection fit in with that philosophy?

“BEGA has never been a trend-driven company. We develop products that remain relevant for years to come. They often have a Bauhaus or mid-century influence. At the same time, we recognise that the Belgian market needs a more minimalist and elegant design language. In response to this demand, our 48V collection has evolved into a particularly comprehensive system that retains German quality whilst offering great design freedom.”

The collection has expanded enormously today. Was that the intention from the outset?

“It started as a modular low-voltage system that gave designers freedom in their outdoor projects. From there, the range has grown step by step. This always takes place in consultation with architects, landscape designers, installers and lighting designers. Today, designers can work within a single platform for paths, terraces, façades, trees, borders and mood lighting, without having to combine different systems.”

Do you also support designers with the technical side of a project?

“Absolutely. As soon as a designer has a particular atmosphere in mind, we help translate that into a concrete lighting plan. Using 3D visualisations, we demonstrate in advance how the light will behave within a space: from sacred and understated to functional. This allows us to make targeted adjustments in terms of atmosphere and functionality. For larger projects, we sometimes even use test set-ups. After all, light is much more than just technology: it adds an extra dimension to architecture and the landscape. You need to be able to assess that dimension properly, either visually or in person if necessary.”

With Quick Fit, you even offer personalisation on top of that extensive collection. Why?

“Because we’ve noticed that bespoke solutions are becoming increasingly important. Designers want luminaires to fit their projects perfectly. Using our online Quick Fit configurator, they can customise aspects such as the colour of the luminaire, the light colour, the height of a post or the length of a cable. They receive a personalised quote and price straight away. Even for small quantities. We’re able to offer this because we manufacture everything ourselves in Germany.”

That sounds quite unusual in a market that is becoming increasingly international.

“That’s exactly it. At BEGA, virtually everything is done in-house: from design and engineering to LEDs, glass and production. This means we can still supply spare parts even twenty years after a luminaire has been launched. That long-term vision is unique to our company. And it’s becoming increasingly aligned with how architects and designers work today: they see sustainability as a key design choice, not just a trend.”
