From cobblestones to grass pavers

When people think of Belgium’s market squares and city centres, cobblestones are inevitably the first thing that come to mind. These days, however, the streetscape is changing. “Traditional cobblestones are becoming scarce and expensive”, says Benjamin van Geem of Prodotto, Deer’s innovation partner. “What’s more, cobbles are often unable to handle today’s heavy traffic. Lorries cause surface damage, resulting in a patchwork of asphalt repairs on roads and squares. What’s more, cobblestones are also naturally impermeable.”

“Climate change adaptation is crucial, which is why we need innovative alternatives, like the new Deer Cobbles range: a timeless, aesthetic reinterpretation of the classic cobblestone, with all the functional benefits of permeable materials such as grass pavers.” “Designing Cobbles proved quite challenging”, Benjamin admits. “We wanted to create a product that retained the charm of cobblestones while meeting modern technical and ecological requirements. Hence, the design features a flat, seamless pattern with subtle references to the texture of cobblestones for an authentic look that never feels clichéd.”

“A key advantage of Cobbles – both in the Grid and Organic versions – is their water permeability. The open joints allow rainwater to penetrate into the soil, unlike classic cobblestones, which are laid on a sand base and are finished with a waterproof grout. Moreover, the design facilitates biodiversity and root growth. Finally, our Cobbles are made of reinforced concrete, ensuring excellent stability, durability and resistance to heavy use.” The fact that they are so easy to install is also an advantage. “Whereas (re)laying traditional cobblestones takes 20 minutes per stone on average, ours is a much faster and more efficient solution”, Benjamin emphasises. “Cobbles is ideally suited to urban and rural projects and can be used in market squares, modern cubeshaped homes and even historic farmsteads. The combination of a classic design with modern requirements gives (landscape) architects the freedom to choose without having to compromise on durability or style. With Cobbles, Deer prioritises efficient water management as well as visual and ecological integration into the landscape, allowing towns and villages to retain their historical charm while preparing for the challenges of the future.”
