Over the past decade, everyone has become aware of the importance of outdoor living spaces. Comfortable lounges, rugs, and even fully-equipped outdoor kitchens: they now all come in outdoor versions. These days, you can even watch TV from the comfort of your terrace thanks to industrial designer Gerd Couckhuyt, who designed a state-of-the-art outdoor screen called Trivis.
“In recent years, Caerus Vision has acquired unique expertise in the market for innovative LED screens for the music and sports industry, both for indoor and outdoor use. This led them to consider developing a screen that allowed everyone to enjoy great picture and sound quality in their garden. They obviously have the technical know-how to produce such a screen. But they needed someone to design the unit, which is why they hired me.”
“I designed piano hinges, in close consultation with an engineer, which are barely visible when open or closed and have been seamlessly integrated into the plane. The screen folds closed like a triptych, transforming it into a sculptural monolith when closed, with the corners adding a nice touch. By seamlessly integrating the technical elements in the back of the unit, the screen looks amazing from all sides, including when open. The technical cabinet and sound are contained in a 70-centimetre-diameter cylinder that is dug into the ground. Although this was no easy feat, all the elements combined create a unit with a pared-down look and feel.”
“The picture quality of the 3 m x 1.80 m screen is pixel-perfect. Moreover, the 360-degree rotating screen seamlessly adjusts to lighting conditions: the more light, the brighter the image. When it’s dark, the LEDs shine less brightly. That way, you can always enjoy superior sharpness.”
“The adjustable height means you can use it to watch a cycling race with friends or set the mood for a garden party. The high-tech screen folds open and closes automatically, which is a particularly smooth process thanks, in part, to the piano hinges. When closed, the screen can remain outside without a cover - even at high wind speeds.”
“The hand-brushed, dark grey aluminium finish creates interesting light reflections, with the screen blending in seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Trivis can be personalised in terms of colour, size and pixel spacing, and the screen can also be incorporated into a pool house.”
