Sustainable design

Sustainable design is becoming increasingly important in a world where conscious consumerism is on the rise. Designing furniture that is built to last for generations isn’t just a trend; it is a necessary movement towards a more responsible approach to raw materials, production and aesthetics. Beyond prioritising recycled materials, sustainability is also grounded in a philosophy of timelessness, quality and innovation.

Designing sustainable furniture is all about making conscious choices, from choosing materials that can withstand intensive use to designs that will stand the test of time. Besides being visually appealing, furniture should also be functional and eco-friendly. Belgian furniture manufacturer Extremis is charting the way forward with its Tools for Togetherness philosophy, which emphasises social interaction and harmony between people and their environment. Pairing a sublime aesthetic with functionality, the brand’s outdoor furniture also reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and innovation inspired by societal change.

Steve Leclercq, R&D sensei at Extremis, explains the company’s unique approach: sustainability begins with design. “A new product only makes sense if it is better in several respects than what already exists. In a world of constant change, we look at how to meet new user needs more effectively and ensure our designs are long-lasting. We only use the most durable materials, which are suitable for intensive outdoor use. The Gargantua – the design with which it all started for Extremis in 1994 – is a good example of the brand’s philosophy, with its enduring form and function. At the time, the versatile garden table with a timeless design that will last for generations marked a shift away from disposable plastic furniture. Its adjustable seating makes it suitable for all ages and occasions, from a family dinner to a party. Three decades later, this design is still relevant thanks to its simple, clean aesthetic and robust materials.

At Extremis, we find following trends less interesting; instead, we prefer to look ahead, which is not always easy. Predicting the future is harder than looking back. This explains why we prefer colours that are easy to combine as well as functional shapes and durable materials such as the best hardwood, aluminium, and stainless steel with coatings that are suitable for outdoor use,” Steve says. “Each design is extensively tested for strength and weather resistance, with innovation playing a major role. Besides applying new technologies, we also use existing techniques in innovative ways. We partnered with the maritime industry for the design of protective covers for our furniture. At Extremis, we also have a wide range of spare parts available so our furniture can be easily repaired, extending its lifespan almost indefinitely. That way, we avoid waste and make the kind of furniture that becomes a valuable heirloom to be cherished for generations.”
