Creating impact, one pot at a time

Robust, beautiful in their simplicity, with a quality finish: all the elements that make Cosapots such eye-catchers. According to founder and conceptual designer Emmanuel Devriendt, the outdoor pots are such a success because they are so straightforward. They exude tranquillity and last a lifetime, offering unrivalled performance and durability with the utmost respect for the plant itself. The success of Cosapots is entirely the result of Devriendt’s drive. Even though it often feels like swimming against the current.

How did Cosapots come about?

Emmanuel: “In 2001, I got my first job in the agricultural and horticultural industry, and my employer asked me to come up with a product that could be sold year round. At that stage, I was already aware of how vital greenery is for people. Together with my colleague, I came up with the idea of an outdoor pot. Originally, these pots are very susceptible to trends and thus a temporary product. After researching the client’s needs, I decided to work with my brother Nicolaes, who is an architect. From that point onwards, we took a more architectural approach to outdoor pots. We decided that our pots would become homes for plants. And that is how the ball got rolling. Instead of merely selling pots, I began to focus on creating products that make a difference.”

What makes your outdoor pots the best choice?

“Each of our designs starts from the Bauhaus principle and three crucial criteria: functionality, durability and pure design. A Cosapot is user-friendly, looks good in any garden, and is almost impossible to break. I believe in combining timeless beauty with pure craftsmanship and high-end technology instead of focusing on ever-changing trends. Our pots are made from natural, strong materials, have shapes that are easy to understand, and come in an earthy colour palette. That is why they also have such a long lifespan. In principle, you should be able to hand down a Cosapot to your grandchildren. Can you think of a more sustainable product?”

The combination of a good design aesthetic and functionality has become the trademark of Cosapots. How do you deal with the increasingly stringent requirements?

“We have experienced exactly the opposite. In my opinion, people tend to be less demanding when it comes to functionality because they fear that it will cost more. However, we place great emphasis on the material’s insulating properties, the design’s wind resistance, and the typical inner rim that you can find in each Cosapot design to meet the plant’s needs as well. Ideally, we would like to raise the technological bar even further, but not everyone is as enthusiastic as we are about this. All too often, people still tend to compromise on quality to keep the price as low as possible. We have decided that we’re not going down this road. It feels like swimming against the current, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Trendwatchers predict that the Slow Life trend will become increasingly popular in 2025. The emphasis is on durable materials, a natural colour palette and simple, preferably round shapes. It seems like you were ahead of the curve from the start. Which adjustments can you still make in light of this trend?

“Rather than thinking about new designs, we want to keep raising the bar on the technological level, focusing on functionality and ease of use instead. The affordability of our products is also something we are working on. A Cosapot shouldn’t not just be something that the happy few can afford. At the same time, we are in the kind of segment where you have to save for an outdoor pot. But our ambition is not to become cheaper. It takes three days to finish a Cosapot. You need seven people for this process. We want to continue treating everyone in the chain with the utmost respect, and that comes at a price. Our main intention, however, is to steer clear of the industry where pots are seen as status symbols and aesthetics prevail over everything else. A product’s design must enhance its functionality, not stand alone.”

How do you see the future of Cosapots?

“Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a Cosapot because your garden designer or architect told you to get one? My dream is to become a reference in the outdoor pots segment and sell our products in even more places around the world. I continue to firmly believe in our way of doing things and in defending our motto: Creating impact, one pot at a time.”
