Ecology and sustainability are an important criterion for the jury in the Vande Moortel Clay Paver Awards. This was also a concern of the garden designer, as evidenced by the well-thought-through combination of materials. For the garden paving, he opted to go with Vande Moortel, the Belgian market leader for clay pavers. “They have a reputation for producing high-quality, long-lasting clay pavers,” says De Brabandere. “But they also excel when it comes to pairing functionality and aesthetics.” De Brabandere settled on the Elegantia vanille clay clay pavers very quickly. “The house’s façade is executed in soft yellow bricks by Vande Moortel, with the vanilla-coloured clinker replicating this colour in the garden. Moreover, its shape is beautifully simple and a good match with the pebbles we used. A sustainable future was also a factor in the choice of planting. “We used around 40 different types of flowers and plants in the design, taking biodiversity into account so the garden largely maintains itself,” Floris adds. “I also wanted to create a garden for all seasons. In summer, the garden is awash with colour; in autumn and especially in winter, there is much less colour, but you experience the season as you should while nature is at rest.”
